Immediate Family

I’m grateful for…

  • My marriage that is a constant source of honesty, grace, encouragement and sacrificial love
  • My mom for being such a loving person
  • My bright, healthy and happy son
  • A loving husband that encourages me to trust God when healing is moving slower than I’d like
  • An intergenerational home where my son feels his grandmother’s love
  • Walks with my husband
  • My son’s laugh

Community & Village

I’m grateful for…

  • Finding others who are deconstructing religion
  • My cousin and almost doctor LaStasha, who continually reached out while I was incredibly sick
  • Axe throwing with friends who have become family
  • A village that cares for my son with so much love
  • Truth-tellers
  • My Instagram community of friends
  • The African Diaspora
  • Incredible co-workers who have supported me through a rough year
  • My teaching career and the impact it has had on children
  • Fall weather to enjoy with my family
  • A team of doctors who teach and listen
  • A happy childhood
  • My nephew, Terrell, who continued to check on how I was doing
  • In-loves who respect my marriage and love their grandbaby so well
  • My sisters, Brooklynn and Niesha for always having my back and my front
  • For how boundaries are transforming my relationships with family for the better

Faith

I’m grateful for…

  • Finding the OurBible App and the devotionals that speak to me
  • Creativity that makes me feel close to God
  • Hope that keeps me going
  • Liberation from toxic theology
  • My relationship with Mother Comforter (Holy Spirit)
  • Womanist theology and how it’s breathed life into my relationship with God
  • Savior God (Jesus) and how He’s always interceding on my behalf
  • Peace during tumultuous times
  • That death and dying will one day be no more
  • God who isn’t intimidated by my questions
  • Compassion and kindness, and how they make us feel seen and loved
  • God’s unending love

The Little Things

I’m grateful for…

  • Cooler fall temps
  • Fall break during a very demanding school year
  • A paid off, reliable car
  • Time to read books
  • Old movies that bring nostalgia
  • A warm, comfortable bed
  • Tacos
  • Funny videos on the internet
  • Teething medicine
  • The great outdoors
  • Waking up
  • Consistency and how it changes my life

Provision

I’m grateful for…

  • Health insurance that allows me to get the care I need
  • The ability to pay our bills and bless others
  • Not wondering where our next meal will come from

Health & Self-Care

I’m grateful for…

  • The ability to process and retain information
  • Mental health professionals who help us when we can’t help ourselves
  • New answers and insights regarding my diagnosis
  • A mind that is open and able to learn new things
  • Peace of mind without fear of the future
  • How holistic and Western medicine can be used together to address illness
  • My best friend’s healthy pregnancy and home birth
  • A deeply restful night’s sleep
  • A healthy heart
  • The ability to say no and mean it
  • Healthful food and clean water
  • A fun Zumba instructor
  • Strength to exercise
  • Surviving childbirth in a country where Black women lose their lives more often

Womanhood

I’m grateful for…

  • The life and work of the late Dr. Jacqueline Rouse, who was my African-American Women’s History professor in college
  • Communal love that women share
  • Survivors of abuse who speak up to protect others from being victims
  • Black women for being a balm
  • Women who break down barriers and shatter glass ceilings

Women I Love Up Close

I’m grateful for…

  • Gabby who is one of the most loving, supportive person I know
  • Best friends who allow me to be my true self
  • Ana for constantly showing me how to boss up and take care of business
  • Brooklynn for being the my voice of reason always
  • My best friends who encourage me everyday
  • Jeida for understanding me like no one else does
